Our Philosophy

Dominican Joe was founded to provide Austin a high-quality coffee shop while supporting those in need in the Dominican Republic. We follow fair-trade practices to produce our organic, Dominican coffee, and the sale of the coffee not only benefits the farmers and their families, but also provides educational opportunities for the children in Makarios' educational programs. These children had no access or limited access to schools and their parents typically make $2-3 a day cutting sugar cane or working construction. By providing you with quality coffee and by providing a quality education in the Dominican Republic, we can help these children and their families rise out of poverty.

We are also committed to working with non-profit organizations in and around Austin to help change the world. If you know of a non-profit that may interested in working with or partnering with us - or of any other ideas to help us to fulfill our mission - please let us know. We would love to hear from you!

The Founders

Dominican Joe was founded by Mehul Patel and Sharla Megilligan, both of whom are committed to positively impacting lives.

Sharla Megilligan founded the non-profit organization Makarios in May 2004 as a non-profit dedicated to providing educational opportunities and vocational training for the impoverished in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Makarios provides the main coffee brand for Dominican Joe.

Mehul has a business background and ran the internet gaming company Swirve.com from 1996 to 2008. Sharla and Mehul believe Dominican Joe is an ideal venture combining their interests and expertise and providing a unique opportunity to help make a positive impact on the world around us.

Both Sharla and Mehul are available and happy to talk to our customers about any part of the shop, our goals, partnership possibilities or anything else!

Our Coffee

Dominican Joe's primary coffee is purchased from Makarios, an Austin-based non-profit organization doing educational development work in the Dominican Republic. Skipping the large corporate middle-man, Makarios works directly with farmers in the region and pays them higher wages and supports their communities in an effort to develop self-sustaining skills for the future.
